A member of the AIA College of Fellows and a LEED Fellow, Susan has 20 years of experience designing and managing sustainability programs and initiatives within the built environment. Susan leads the High Performance and Sustainable Construction Division at Pepper Construction Group. She applies design to action by providing tools to evaluate investments, lower costs, and achieve sustainability goals for her clients. She also designs and implements innovative solutions for the construction industry, such as the Net Zero jobsite trailer that debuted at Greenbuild 2018 and the Building Performance Tool application that quickly analyzes the ROI of design and constructability options. She is the driving force behind Pepper’s companywide carbon drawdown program, inspired by Paul Hawkins’ work "Drawdown," working towards decarbonizing the construction industry. In addition, she is currently focused on leading Pepper’s Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) initiative.
Susan is an active advocate for sustainability in Chicago and other regional markets. She has initiated and participated in many influential projects and groups, such as Chicago’s Energy Benchmarking Ordinance, the AIA2030 Chicago Working Group, Chicago’s AIA COTE, RETROFIT Chicago, the Chicago Biomimicry Group, the Illinois Green Alliance Board of Directors and the Associated General Contractors of America Environmental Steering Committee.
Currently, she serves on the Illinois Energy Conservation Advisory Council, where she uses her technical expertise in commercial buildings to advocate for energy efficiency to develop a new stretch energy code for the State. She also serves on the board of Turning Point, an organization that supports domestic violence survivors in McHenry County.
Susan holds a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Oregon and is a frequent speaker at national sustainable conventions.

Drawing on more than 10 years of experience in mechanical design, Juanita is an environmentalist for the built environment and an advocate for diversity in STEM careers. In 2009, she was one of the first people to earn the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Accredited Professional credential with the specialization in Building Design and Construction. Juanita founded BIM for Better and hosts Shades of Green Chicago, a podcast highlighting the stories of environmentalists of color. Her work has been informed by her study of psychology, human rights and massage therapy, which allows her to incorporate a well-rounded health and wellness perspective into the built environment. Juanita's contributions to the Chicago sustainability community include serving as Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the WasteShed, a nonprofit that diverts material from landfills for creative reuse. She is also on the advisory council of Environmentalists of Color.
Before transitioning to manager of high performance construction in Indiana, Calvin started at Pepper as a senior project manager on interiors projects, where he developed a strong interest in Sustainable and High Performance construction from his involvement in LEED Gold and Silver-certified projects. As manager of high performance construction, Calvin is part of Pepper's Integrated Construction Services team and works closely with project teams to incorporate sustainable practices and High Performance services. In addition to helping clients with high performance strategies, Calvin is also working on solutions to reduce construction's impact on the environment and bring building codes up to modern building performance standards. He holds a Master of Science and Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, both from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
Allison Biernacki is a recent graduate of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign where she received her Bachelors Degree in Architectural Studies with a minor in Sustainability, Energy and Environment. Acting as Project Management Lead - High Performance for the Ohio offices, Allison works to evaluate life cycle costs of building systems in conjunction with our cost estimating and coordinates LEED, WELL and Net Zero certifications. She provides insights and high performance services while working closely with our preconstruction, virtual and MEP teams.
